Movie Making

September 14 – October 19, 2015

Over the span of 6 weeks, 10 kids made movies in the woods with a GoPro camera, iMovie editing software, costumes and face paint. The kids worked scene by scene, weaving their ideas together, taking turns filming and directing the action. Each week the group edited footage and developed the plot of each project spontaneously. The final production was called The Magical Yurt, a fantasy movie about a group of friends who travel to a mysterious land.

Session 1: Harlem Shake

September 14, 2015

The first day of the Movie Making workshop, 11 wild kids exploded during the making of the Harlem Shake video. After a few takes, the group watched the footage and made this video.

Session 2: The M&M's Story

September 21, 2015

Kids marched up the hill for the second class of the Movie Making workshop. In order to introduce the lesson on story making, we watched a few selected examples of short movies made by kids on YouTube. One of the best examples was made by a 5th grade elementary school class in Colorado about mind control cookies. We looked carefully at how they set-up camera angles and how the video was edited. After a little bit of brainstorming our group came together on a storyline based on the costumes available. We acted and shot each scene a few times to get it just right. Unsurprisingly, the candy prop disappeared before the the camera was turned on.

Session 3: The Magical Yurt

September 28, 2015

Today we started filming The Magical Yurt movie. The plot begins with a group of friends who accidentally find a portal to another world. There, they encounter a pack of wild boys who chase them through the forest.

Session 4: The Magical Yurt 2

October 5, 2015

In the second day of filming The Magical Yurt, everyone got back into their costumes and reviewed the plot from the week before. In this weeks scene the group of friends who teleported to the fantasy world try to rescue their captured friend from the Queen, played by Olivia.

Session 5: The Magical Yurt 3

October 12, 2015

Today the kids filmed a chase scene which ensued after the captive boy (played by James) escaped from the dungeon. The Wild Boys ran down to the pond after the strangers. With the movie approaching completion we were able to edit a short trailer.

Session 6: The Magical Yurt 4

October 19, 2015

In the last week of filming The Magical Yurt, the group watches footage from the previous weeks and rehearses their lines for the final scene. In this last encounter with the Wild Boys everyone meets peacefully and the group comes together to play and celebrate wildness.
