SCULPTURE HOMESCHOOL

September 14 - October 30, 2020

The fall 2020 Sculpture Homeschool program ran from September 14 to October 30. It consisted of four groups of 10 students (40 total students). Groups met one day per week from 10am-3pm for seven consecutive weeks. Each day brought a new project and opportunity for kids (ages 7-14) to work with power tools, lumber, paint and recycled materials.

FRIDAY GROUP: RAMP

THURSDAY GROUP: 2x4 CHAIR

October 8, 2020

On Thursday we built 10 chairs out of 2x4’s. Each student used a pattern to trace and cut the back legs out of 2x6 boards. The rest of the chair was made from scrap cut offs around the shop. The project was an exercise in learning how to lay out lines with a speed square and cutting angles on the miter saw.

WEEK 5

TUESDAY GROUP: SIDE TABLES

October 13, 2020

Side tables made from scrap 2x3's and 1x3 strapping.

FRIDAY GROUP: SACHS CHAIR 1

October 16, 2020

Chair design inspired by @tomsachs.

WEEK 6

THURSDAY GROUP: Krumm

October 22, 2020

On Thursday we built a 10ft tall sculpture of Krumm – a monster from the 90’s cartoon show #ahhrealmonsters. The show is about three young monsters who attend school under a city dump and learn to frighten humans. Half of the group started by cutting the shape of the monster out of plywood, while the other half painted the body, lips, and hair. After the paint dried, we attached the limbs and armpit hair onto the monster’s body. Then we added hinges to make the nose into a small door.
