SCULPTURE HOMESCHOOL
September 14 - October 30, 2020
The fall 2020 Sculpture Homeschool program ran from September 14 to October 30. It consisted of four groups of 10 students (40 total students). Groups met one day per week from 10am-3pm for seven consecutive weeks. Each day brought a new project and opportunity for kids (ages 7-14) to work with power tools, lumber, paint and recycled materials.
WEEK 1
MONDAY GROUP: TOOL TRAINING
September 14, 2020
The Monday group kicked off our fall programs. The first day is all about getting to know each other, and getting to know the tools. The group worked in partners to start building animal-themed sculptures.
TUESDAY GROUP: BOXES
September 15, 2020
FRIDAY GROUP: BENCHES
September 18, 2020
We wrapped up our first week of fall programs with a furniture building project. This group of 11 kids measured, cut, screwed, sanded, and stained three benches that we will be donating to Waitsfield Elementary School.
WEEK 2
TUESDAY GROUP: BOXING ROBOTS
September 22, 2020
This is our robot boxing game. Inspired by marionettes and the game #rockemsockemrobots. Kids built the platforms and assembled their boxers with hinged limbs and plywood boxing gloves. The noses are attached by magnets - the team who knocks off the opponents nose first wins.
THURSDAY GROUP: BALLOON POP
September 24, 2020
FRIDAY GROUP: RAMP
September 25, 2020
This group spent all day Friday working together to build a giant ramp prototype. This is part one of a two part project -in our next class each student will build their own bike, ski, or sled ramp.
WEEK 3
MONDAY GROUP: COPERTHWAITE BENCH
September 29, 2020
Our Monday class worked in pairs to cut, shape, and assemble their own pine board bench. This simple design was inspired by the late author, educator, and maker #billcoperthwaite.
THURSDAY GROUP: HEXAGON SHELF
October 1, 2020
We started building a hexagon shelving unit for storing and organizing tools and safety gear at our shop. Kids worked in pairs to pre-drill, screw, sand, and paint each section.
Friday GROUP: Ramp 2
October 2, 2020
WEEK 4
THURSDAY GROUP: 2x4 CHAIR
October 8, 2020
On Thursday we built 10 chairs out of 2x4’s. Each student used a pattern to trace and cut the back legs out of 2x6 boards. The rest of the chair was made from scrap cut offs around the shop. The project was an exercise in learning how to lay out lines with a speed square and cutting angles on the miter saw.
FriDAY GROUP: Fort Building
October 9, 2020
WEEK 5
TUESDAY GROUP: SIDE TABLES
October 13, 2020
Side tables made from scrap 2x3's and 1x3 strapping.
WEEK 6
THURSDAY GROUP: Krumm
October 22, 2020
On Thursday we built a 10ft tall sculpture of Krumm – a monster from the 90’s cartoon show #ahhrealmonsters. The show is about three young monsters who attend school under a city dump and learn to frighten humans. Half of the group started by cutting the shape of the monster out of plywood, while the other half painted the body, lips, and hair. After the paint dried, we attached the limbs and armpit hair onto the monster’s body. Then we added hinges to make the nose into a small door.
